Hi friends! Happy Monday! A happy belated Mother’s Day to all of my mama friends out there. I hope you had a wonderful and relaxing weekend. Friday night, the Pilot and P had a special daddy-daughter date while Liv and I went to the pool for movie night. (I felt bad because P really wanted to go, but since she had a fever two days prior, we wanted to play it safe. She had a blast with Tom and they went to the park and Target while Livi and I … [Read more...]

gluten-free Irish Soda Bread recipe
Hi friends! Hope you’re having a wonderful week so far. We’re on day 3 of “Operation Get The Girls to Stay in their Bed All Night” and it’s going swimmingly. (<– aka it’s a hot mess) I’ll post an update soon, but for now, we don’t have much of an update lol. I got up, took the Orangetheory Infinity class (it was so hard but so good) and am hanging out for a sec before I head to pick up … [Read more...]
Happy heart day
Hey hey! How’s the week going? I hope you’re enjoying the day, and happy Valentine’s Day to all of you. My valentine is out of town (again), but I’m excited to celebrate with the little ladies and enjoy Galentine’s dinner with Meg later tonight. Thank goodness he’ll be back later tonight – the girls were like “what the heck?” when they found out he had to leave again for a bit – but we’ll celebrate with him in the morning. Vegan Sugar Cookies
This recipe is adapted from one that appears in an old Iowa church cookbook called World’s Best Sugar Cookies. Iowan church ladies are known to wax hyperbolic about plenty of things — recipes in these cookbooks for “green salad,” for instance, typically involve neon-hued Jello and no vegetables of any kind. But these cookies are the Real Deal. These are the cookies I helped my mother decorate every Christmas while I was a … [Read more...]
Vegan Poppy Seed Swirl Bread
Whether you know it as poppy seed swirl bread, makowiec, Mohnstrudel, makovnjača, or something else altogether, and whether you eat it for Easter, Christmas, Purim, or none of the above, this lightly sweetened yeast bread swirled with sweetened poppy seed filling is a really special treat. Poppy seeds are a common ingredient in Central and Eastern European desserts, from breads and cakes to cookies and puddings, and I find poppy seed fillings to … [Read more...]

New Halloween traditions
As of yesterday, I still didn't know what I was going to do today for Mark's birthday. It's been our tradition every year to go to my parents' house for dinner, cake, and ice cream, let Mark open his presents, and then hand out candy to trick-or-treaters. It rained pretty much all day today, starting just after I started my long run. My long run was only six miles this week, so I didn't mind running in the rain. I kept the pace slow, and just … [Read more...]

Whiskey Apple Soda
'Twas the week of Thanksgiving and I'm not with my family...so I'm drinking to dull the pain. Just kidding! I was browsing the Williams-Sonoma website for Thanksgiving recipe ideas and came across the Whiskey Apple Cider recipe. It included Bourbon (JJ's favorite) and Ginger Beer (my favorite) so I declared it the Official Cocktail of Thanksgiving 2013. Of course I had to test it out first just to be sure, and it's a winner! The bourbon is a bit … [Read more...]
White Cheddar Beer Mac and Cheese
(from my Instagram: ashmelzorn)Back in October when my family took a trip to Oregon we visited Deschutes Brewery in Bend, Oregon. We began our meal with their Beer Cheese and pretzel dip which was insanely memorable. The cheese was a melted white cheddar laced with beer and there was coarse stone ground mustard rimming the bowl. When you swiped the pretzel through the mustard and into the cheese it was phenomenal. When it came time to make our … [Read more...]

An amazing Halloween with the fam. I can’t believe how much our little sushi roll has grown in the past year!
